How do I Stop Water from Coming in My Basement?

Is your basement plagued with incessant water or flooding? Are you searching for the best way to keep water out of your basement? Do you want to learn the right basement waterproofing technique to get rid your basement of wetness and nasty smell?

Do not stress out. We have prepared the tips you can follow to stop water from coming into your basement. Here are the 5 ways you can stop water from coming in your basement:

  1. Extend Your Gutter

The first option to consider is your gutter. Check if your gutter is close to the home and the downspouts dump water directly in the basement. If that is the case, you can add metal or plastic gutter extensions to move water away from the basement. If necessary, you may run underground drain pipe to move large run-off farther from your home.

  1. Grade the Surrounding Ground

If water is continually getting into your basement despite basement waterproofing in place, consider grading the ground that surrounds your house, especially the basement in a way that it slopes away from home. That will direct water away from the basement and foundation of the house.

  1. Fix Footing Drains

Water may be coming into your basement due to faulty or clogged footing drains. Usually, footing drains are installed to carry water away from the foundation of the house. However, the drains may get blocked over time. If you are a DIYer, you can remove the clogging yourself or hire an experienced plumber to fix the footing drains. This will ensure that water does not seep into your basement.

  1. Fix Interior Basement Waterproofing

It is possible that there are cracks in the interior basement waterproofing that allow water to come into your basement, fix it from the inside. Apply sealant or waterproofing solutions to your basement walls. You can use concrete waterproof coating, silicate-based concrete sealer, or waterproofing paint to block the crevices or cracks in the basement waterproofing.

  1. Pump the Water

If you are having a hard time keeping surface after out, you should address the issue from the inside. One way to go about this is to create an internal drain system in the form of a sump pit and install a sump pump to pump water collected in the sump pit until you complete other types of basement waterproofing to stop water from coming in.

The tips above are sure-fire ways to stop water from coming into your basement. If you cannot undertake the tasks by yourself, hire a professional plumber to help you out.
